Overview
Our Level 4 ‘International Route’ is suitable for you if English is not your first or main working language and you wish to study a full degree in one of the following subjects:
The International Route allows you to be admitted to your degree programme at IELTS 5.5 (minimum across all components). During your first year of studies (Level 4) you study two modules in Academic English & Skills. These replace two specified subject-based modules and are designed to develop your language and academic skills.
Upon successful completion of Level 4, you will be able to progress to regular Level 5 studies in your main subject(s).Ìý
On this route you will:
- Develop competence in the use of English in academic settings in general and your own combining subject in particular.
- Develop a series of transferable academic and interpersonal skills to equip you for university study in English such as essay writing, presentation, note taking, group work, examination techniques and skills for autonomous language study.
- Gain confidence and experience at functioning in English-medium academic and vocational environments.
- Benefit from quality teaching by skilled academics.
- Benefit from our specialist individual and tailored support for international students.
- Work with international students studying on a range of business-related programmes.
The Course

Academic Language & Skills 1
This module develops your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in academic contexts related to your chosen degree subject, as well as developing learning and study skills relevant to understanding and producing appropriate academic discourse for your chosen programme of study.
Academic Language & Skills 2
This module further extends and improves speaking, listening and reading skills in academic contexts that are developed in Academic Language & Skills 1, but in this module greater emphasis is placed on the skills and discourse awareness for more extended pieces of academic writing, and in particular the knowledge and skills required to write academic essays, reports and projects at Levels 5 and above.
It aims to continue to make you aware of your own areas for development in the use of academic English and to maximise your use of strategies for reflection, self-evaluation and advanced proficiency.Ìý
Teaching and Assessment
How you will learn
All our classes are workshop-based and include interactive and developmental activities. We expect you to ask questions, discuss information, give presentations and evaluate information. Group work and group projects form an important part of your studies.Ìý
Our classes allow you to get to know your tutors and other students well. For these two modules, you work in class groups of no more than 20 students. All classes take place on campus.Ìý
In addition to your assessed modules, you will also be able to participate in additional (non-assessed) classes. This is an important way for you to integrate into UK-based study whilst improving your language and academic skills. The courses are provided at no extra charge to you.Ìý
A weekly class in academic and professional skills (two hours: two semesters) gives you the opportunity to work alongside UK and other international undergraduate students whilst developing your academic skills for English-medium based study.Ìý
Weekly classes will introduce you to academic life at the ¾ÞÈéÎÞÂë and outline the ways we do things (1.25 hours: 10 classes:) with other international students.Ìý
Weekly language and discussion groups (1.5 hours: two semesters) will provide informal tutor-led sessions to encourage you to explore and discuss topics of contemporary interest alongside international students from across the university.Ìý
IELTS preparation classes (12 hours over one semester) are for students needing to undertake IELTS examinations for postgraduate university entrance.Ìý

Entry Requirements
The programme is open only to those for whom English is not a first/main working language.
Applicants must satisfy both conditions A and B:
A: Meet the entry requirements for your main subject Ìý
B: IELTS 5.5 minimum (or recognised equivalent) with no element lower than 5.5 Ìý
Applicants whose language does not yet meet requirement B are eligible for entry via successful completion of the University’s Pre-sessional programmes.Ìý
